They’re usually made with sweet Hungarian peppers (or yellow banana peppers), stuffed with a flavorful pork and rice mixture, and simmered in a rich tomato sauce. Served with crusty bread or a little sour cream on the side, they’re hearty and so satisfying.


🍲 Traditional Hungarian Stuffed Peppers (Töltött Paprika)

Ingredients (6 peppers)

  • 6 Hungarian wax peppers (or yellow bell peppers if you can’t find them)
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground pork (or pork + beef mix)
  • ½ cup uncooked rice
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp parsley, chopped

For the Tomato Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp oil or lard
  • 2 tbsp flour (for thickening)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 quart (1 liter) tomato juice (or blended canned tomatoes)
  • 1–2 tsp sugar (to balance acidity)
  • Salt, to taste
