Pörkölt is one of Hungary’s most traditional dishes – a rich beef and onion stew flavored with paprika. It’s hearty, comforting, and usually served with nokedli (dumplings), boiled potatoes, or even pasta.
🇭🇺 Pörkölt (Hungarian Beef and Onion Stew)
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs (900 g) beef chuck or stewing beef, cut into cubes
- 2 large onions, finely chopped
- 3 tbsp lard or vegetable oil (lard is traditional)
- 2 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
- 1–2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional, but traditional)
- 1 bell pepper, chopped (optional)
- 2 medium tomatoes, chopped (or 1 tbsp tomato paste)
- 1 cup (250 ml) beef broth or water
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
