Komisbrot Hungarian

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Bread:
    • Take stale bread slices and spread them lightly with butter.
  2. Sprinkle the Topping:
    • Mix sugar with cocoa powder (and cinnamon, if using).
    • Generously sprinkle over the buttered side of the bread.
  3. Toast:
    • Place the slices on a baking sheet.
    • Toast in a preheated oven at 180°C / 350°F for about 5–7 minutes, until the sugar-cocoa topping melts slightly and the bread is crisp.
    • (Traditionally, this was sometimes done in a hot pan or even quickly over the stove!)
  4. Serve:
    • Enjoy warm, like a sweet snack.
    • Best with a glass of cold milk or tea.

✨ This was such a comfort food for many Hungarian kids — quick, inexpensive, and delicious. It’s not a fancy cake, but it carries loads of childhood memories.

Would you like me to also share the more modern Komisbrot cake-style version (where the bread is layered with cocoa, sugar, and baked like a pudding)?
