Hungarian Plum Dumplings🇭🇺

Instructions:

  1. Prepare potatoes: Boil potatoes until soft, peel, and mash until smooth. Let them cool slightly.
  2. Make dough: Mix mashed potatoes with flour, egg, and a pinch of salt. Knead into a soft dough. (Add more flour if sticky, but keep it tender.)
  3. Shape dumplings: Roll dough on a floured surface to about ½-inch thick. Cut into squares large enough to wrap around a plum half.
  4. Fill: Place half a plum (or a whole small one) in the center, add a sugar cube (or spoon of sugar), and seal dough around it, forming a ball.
  5. Cook: Bring a large pot of salted water to boil. Drop dumplings in gently and cook until they float to the top (about 6–8 minutes). Remove with a slotted spoon.
  6. Breadcrumb coating: In a skillet, melt butter and toast breadcrumbs until golden. Mix in cinnamon. Roll cooked dumplings in this mixture until well coated.
  7. Serve: Dust with powdered sugar and enjoy warm.

✨ Some families also add a little apricot jam instead of sugar cubes inside for extra flavor.

Would you like me to also share a shortcut version (without potatoes in the dough) that uses only flour and eggs, for quicker preparation?
